When scientists set out to map a forest’s species or restore a degraded coastline, the most useful database is often not a satellite image or a research paper. It is the memory of the people who have lived there for generations. Local and indigenous communities hold detailed, field-tested knowledge about which plants heal, which fish breed in which season, and which patches of land must be left untouched. This body of wisdom, passed down through stories, rituals, and daily practice, is now recognised as one of the most powerful tools available for protecting biodiversity. The challenge, and the opportunity, lies in combining it with modern science.

What traditional knowledge actually is
Traditional knowledge refers to the practices, innovations, and understanding that indigenous and local communities have built up over centuries of close interaction with their environment. It is developed and passed from one generation to the next through oral accounts, cultural values, local languages, and customary practices rather than through formal documentation. Because it is rooted in long observation of a single place, it tends to be highly specific: a community may recognise dozens of varieties of a single crop or know the exact flowering time of a medicinal shrub.
This knowledge is not a relic. The international Convention on Biological Diversity commits member states to respect, preserve, and promote it as a foundation for conserving and sustainably using biological diversity. In other words, traditional knowledge is treated not as folklore but as a serious input into global conservation policy.
Why local communities are effective custodians
Communities living inside or beside an ecosystem have a direct stake in its survival. Their food, medicine, and livelihoods depend on it, so they have strong incentives to use resources carefully. Over generations this produces practices that look remarkably like modern conservation science: seasonal harvesting, rotating use of land, protecting breeding grounds, and setting certain areas off-limits entirely. Researchers increasingly find that these systems already contain the elements of adaptive management that ecologists now recommend.
Discovering new species and medicines
One of the clearest contributions of traditional knowledge is in ethnobotany, the study of how people use plants. When researchers document which plants a community uses and why, they often uncover species and uses that science had not formally recorded. This shortcut is valuable because of the sheer scale of the unknown: of the hundreds of thousands of higher plant species on earth, fewer than ten percent have been examined for their chemical constituents. Traditional knowledge tells scientists which plants are worth studying first.
Ethnobotanical research in India
India is a mega-biodiverse country with a deep reservoir of plant knowledge held by its tribal communities. A detailed study among the tribes of Mizoram documented 124 ethnomedicinal plant species across 60 families, recorded from more than two hundred informants. The researchers’ explicit aim was to find species that could become sources for new drug formulations. Studies like this preserve fragile oral knowledge in written form while opening doors for further pharmacological research. The same body of work warns that this knowledge is gravely threatened by rapid economic development, which is precisely why documentation has become urgent.
The principle extends beyond medicine. Indigenous agricultural practices in India have long preserved soil fertility, conserved water through underground tanks and check dams, and maintained a diversity of crop varieties as a part of cultural custom rather than deliberate policy.
Ethnobotanical research in Mexico
Mexico offers a parallel story on another continent. It is one of the world’s most biologically and culturally diverse nations, and ethnobotanical research there has become a structured discipline. Knowledge of plant use among more than fifty indigenous groups has been systematically gathered into national databases, positioning the field as a key route to understanding traditional botanical knowledge and developing criteria to protect biodiversity. In regions such as the Tehuacรกn Valley, long-term study of how communities manage cacti and palms has informed strategies for conserving species in their natural habitat.
Mexico also illustrates the risks. The Maya ICBG project in Chiapas set out to document Maya plant knowledge to develop possible medicines, but it collapsed amid disputes over prior informed consent and who actually owned the knowledge. The episode is a reminder that working with communities requires fair benefit-sharing, not extraction.
Managing marine resources in the Pacific Islands
Traditional knowledge is not limited to forests. Across the Pacific Islands, communities have managed their oceans for millennia using customary systems of restriction. These go by different names in different cultures: kapu in Polynesia, tabu in Fiji, bul in Micronesia, and ra’ui in the Cook Islands. The shared idea is to restrict access to certain areas or species during key periods so that marine life can recover.
In effect, these are community-run marine protected areas that existed long before the modern concept was invented. In Fiji, a reef might be declared off-limits for months or years, often to mark the death of a chief, with the unintended benefit of letting fish stocks rebuild. Local leaders enforce the closures, drawing on a careful understanding of species’ life cycles.
From custom to formal conservation
What makes the Pacific example powerful is how successfully these practices have been scaled up. The Locally Managed Marine Area approach revives these traditions, sometimes blending them with modern monitoring techniques. The network has grown to more than 500 participating villages across eight countries, with Fiji hosting the largest number of sites. One network in Vanuatu, covering more than 3,000 hectares of marine and land area managed by sixteen communities, won an international Equator Prize for its conservation results. The single most important factor behind these gains has been community stewardship itself.
How India formally integrates community knowledge
India has built legal machinery to capture and protect this knowledge. Under its biodiversity law, local bodies create Biodiversity Management Committees, which prepare People’s Biodiversity Registers. These registers document the availability and traditional uses of local biological resources, including medicinal plants, creating a written record that can support conservation and guard against misappropriation.
Alongside this formal system runs a much older one. Across the country, communities have long protected sacred groves, patches of forest set aside for religious reasons and left undisturbed. In North-East India, sacred groves and community forest reserves are prime examples of conservation driven entirely by local custom. A large UN-supported programme in the region recently worked with around 100,000 indigenous people across five states to revitalise such practices, treating the integration of indigenous methods into national plans as a promising route to large-scale conservation.
The Chipko legacy
Perhaps the most famous Indian example of community-led conservation is the Chipko movement of the 1970s, when villagers in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, many of them women, physically protected trees from commercial logging. It demonstrated that local communities are not passive bystanders but active defenders of their ecosystems, capable of shaping national environmental debate.
Why collaboration matters
The strongest results come not when science replaces traditional knowledge or when tradition resists science, but when the two work together. Communities contribute detailed, place-specific observation accumulated over generations. Scientists contribute tools for testing, measuring, and scaling those insights. When indigenous knowledge is acknowledged and built into formal conservation, it also creates a sense of ownership within communities, which is essential for any project to last.
There are real cautions. Traditional knowledge is being lost faster than species in some places, often invisibly, as younger generations move away and elders pass on. Documentation can help, but it must be paired with respect for the communities’ rights over their own knowledge and a fair share of any benefits that follow. Conservation that sidelines the people who have protected an ecosystem tends to fail; conservation that partners with them tends to endure.
