Long before forestry became a science taught in universities, communities across the subcontinent were already protecting trees, ponds, and entire patches of forest through rituals, taboos, and a deep sense of the sacred. This body of community-led practice has a name: ethnoforestry. It treats forests not just as timber stock but as cultural and spiritual spaces worth conserving for their own sake. As pressure on natural resources grows, foresters and ecologists are realising that these old systems hold practical lessons for managing forests sustainably today.

What is ethnoforestry?
Ethnoforestry can be understood as the creation, conservation, management, and use of forest resources through the continued practice of customary ways by local communities. The term was developed and popularised by forester Deep Narayan Pandey, and it gained formal acceptance at the XI World Forestry Congress held in Turkey in 1997. Because it grows out of the relationship between a specific community and its surroundings, ethnoforestry is always local and specific. A practice that works for the Khasi of Meghalaya may look completely different from one followed in the dry Aravallis of Rajasthan.
The central idea is that ordinary people, over many generations, have built reliable knowledge about which species to protect, when to harvest, and which areas to leave untouched. This knowledge is encoded not in scientific manuals but in religious belief, folklore, festivals, and social rules.
How it differs from scientific forestry
Conventional or scientific forestry, introduced largely during the colonial period, focused on maximising timber yield and treated forests as state property to be managed by trained officials. Ethnoforestry, by contrast, places the community at the centre. Conservation here is driven by cultural meaning rather than commercial calculation. The two approaches are not enemies. Many innovative foresters have absorbed traditional practices into modern management, and the smartest forest policy today tries to combine the ecological discipline of science with the social legitimacy of local custom.
Roots in a long tradition
The reverence for forests runs deep in the cultural memory of the region. References to the value of trees and the rules for managing them appear in ancient texts, and the foundations of organised forestry are very old. In his treatise on statecraft, the ancient thinker Kautilya outlined a structure for a forest department, classified different kinds of forests, and laid down principles for their management as early as the fourth century BCE. This long history explains why so many conservation practices are wrapped in ritual and why they have survived for centuries without formal laws to enforce them.
Sacred groves: living gene banks
The most striking expression of ethnoforestry is the sacred grove: a patch of forest protected because it is believed to be the home of a deity or ancestral spirits. Cutting trees, hunting animals, or even removing a fallen branch is often forbidden. These prohibitions, enforced by community belief rather than fences or guards, have preserved some of the least disturbed forest in the country.
The famous Mawphlang grove near Shillong shows how this works in practice. Guides describe how children are taught not to disturb so much as a twig, because the forest deity is believed to protect the woods and punish those who harm them. As a result, Mawphlang feels almost primeval, dotted with orchids, ferns, mushrooms, and medicinal plants that have vanished elsewhere. Researchers describe this kind of collective restraint as a form of social fencing, where shared responsibility does the work that a physical barrier would otherwise have to do.
A network spread across the country
Sacred groves are not unique to the northeast. They are found in almost every region, each with its own local name. They are called Devara Kadu in Karnataka, Oran in Rajasthan, Sarna or Jaherthan in Jharkhand, Dev Van in Himachal Pradesh, and Umang Lai in Manipur, among many others. In the Khasi Hills they are known as Law Kyntang or Law Lyngdoh, while in the Jaintia Hills they are called Khloo Blai. The Meghalaya Biodiversity Board describes these groves as a natural treasure house of biodiversity and a refuge for endemic, endangered, and rare species, sustained by the traditional religious belief of tribal communities. Estimates suggest there are tens of thousands of such groves across the country, though many are shrinking.
Why groves matter for in-situ conservation
In ecology, in-situ conservation means protecting species in their natural habitat rather than removing them to a zoo or seed bank. Sacred groves are textbook examples. Because they are often the only undisturbed vegetation left in an area, they act as genetic reservoirs that hold the original gene pool of native plants and animals. Studies have found that medicinal plants missing from ordinary forests still thrive inside groves, and that rare and endemic species concentrate within these protected patches. Comparative research has even shown that community-protected groves can support tree diversity and density comparable to formally protected forests, a powerful argument that local stewardship works.
The benefits go beyond plants and animals. Many groves sit near streams, springs, or ponds and help regulate local water supply. Their dense canopy and undisturbed soil prevent erosion, improve soil fertility, recharge groundwater, and store carbon, making them small but genuine climate assets.
Beyond groves: sacred ponds and individual trees
Ethnoforestry is wider than groves alone. Communities also protect sacred ponds and water bodies, where fish and aquatic life are left undisturbed, and these tanks often double as crucial water sources for villages. Individual trees carry sacred status too. The peepal, neem, and banyan are widely venerated, and beads from the rudraksha tree hold spiritual value, which has helped protect these species on farmland and along field boundaries. Practices like maintaining temple gardens, planting trees in homesteads, and preserving small groves on farm edges all extend conservation into everyday agricultural life. Together they form a patchwork of protected nature woven directly into how people live and farm.
Supporting tribal and local livelihoods
These practices are not only about conservation; they sustain people. Forest-dependent and tribal communities rely on these protected areas for fuel, fodder, fruit, medicinal plants, and non-timber forest produce. In states like Chhattisgarh, where a large share of the land is under forest, tribal groups hold a deep knowledge of plant resources used for medicine, food, and shelter. When this knowledge is respected and harvesting is sustainable, forests keep providing for generations. The same study warns that destructive, market-driven harvesting and a fading interest among younger people are damaging both the species and the knowledge itself.
In some places, sacred groves have also become a source of income through carefully managed ecotourism, which creates jobs while giving communities a fresh economic reason to protect their forests.
Integrating tradition with modern forest management
The real opportunity lies in combining ethnoforestry with formal, science-based management. Participatory models such as Joint Forest Management already recognise that local people are partners, not obstacles, in protecting forests. Traditional practices supply the on-the-ground commitment and detailed species knowledge, while modern forestry adds monitoring, restoration techniques, and legal protection. Pandey’s own work showed that local knowledge proved useful for forest restoration and protected-area management even in the dry, low-rainfall districts of Rajasthan.
Legal recognition and its tensions
Several laws now offer sacred groves indirect protection. The Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act of 2002 introduced the category of community reserves, which can protect community land without changing its ownership. The Biological Diversity Act of 2002, the Forest (Conservation) Act, and the Wildlife Protection Act together create a web of safeguards, and groves can also be declared Biodiversity Heritage Sites. Under the Forest Rights Act of 2006, groves can be treated as Community Forest Resources, empowering the Gram Sabha to manage them. There is a genuine tension here, though: bringing groves under formal protection can sometimes reduce the autonomy of the very communities whose beliefs kept them alive. The challenge for policy is to protect without taking over.
Threats to a fragile inheritance
Despite their resilience, these traditions are under strain. Down To Earth reports that many groves are dying across the country due to deforestation, mining, and development, and that the decline of groves also threatens the tribal cultures attached to them. Urbanisation and encroachment fragment groves, grazing and firewood collection wear down the canopy, and in some cases the shift from nature worship toward formal temple worship has led to trees being cleared inside grove boundaries. Perhaps the biggest long-term risk is cultural: as younger generations move toward modern lifestyles and old taboos lose their grip, the social fencing that once protected these forests weakens.
The encouraging news is that conservation groups, scientists, and communities are increasingly working together to document grove biodiversity, revive traditions, and build livelihood models that give people a stake in keeping forests standing. Ethnoforestry reminds us that sustainable forest management is not only a technical problem but a cultural one, and that some of the best answers were worked out long ago.
