Few countries pack as much geographical variety into such a small space as Bhutan. In a country slightly smaller than Haryana, you can travel from steaming subtropical jungles to permanently frozen Himalayan peaks in just a few hours by road. This landlocked kingdom in the Eastern Himalayas has built its entire identity, economy, and even its constitution around its dramatic terrain. Understanding Bhutan’s geography is the first step to understanding why it governs the way it does, why hydropower drives its economy, and why it remains one of the most ecologically intact nations on Earth.

Location and physical setting
Bhutan sits at the eastern extreme of the Himalayan range, sandwiched between two Asian giants. To the north and northwest lies China, specifically the Tibet Autonomous Region, while India borders it to the south, east, and west. The kingdom shares its southern frontier with the Indian states of Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh. Although Nepal and Bangladesh are close neighbours, neither shares a land border with Bhutan.
The country covers roughly 38,394 square kilometres, making it a compact nation by global standards. Yet within this area lies an astonishing range of elevations. The land drops to about 100 metres along the Indian border in the south and rises to over 7,500 metres in the north. Gangkhar Puensum, Bhutan’s highest peak at around 7,570 metres, sits on the border with Tibet and holds the distinction of being the world’s highest unclimbed mountain. This extreme variation across a short distance is what makes Bhutan’s geography so remarkable.
The three geographic regions
Geographers typically divide Bhutan into three distinct zones running from north to south: the Great Himalayas, the Inner (or Lesser) Himalayas, and the southern foothills with the Duars Plain. Each region has its own terrain, climate, and pattern of human settlement.
The northern region: Great Himalayas
The northern belt is Bhutan’s most dramatic landscape. Here, the Great Himalayan range features glaciated peaks, alpine meadows, and permanent snowfields. A significant portion of this region stays under perpetual snow, and extreme weather with high winds is the norm. This harsh terrain supports very little human settlement. The few people who live here are largely nomadic yak herders who move to warmer places in winter and return to high pastures in summer for grazing. The snow-fed rivers originating in this alpine zone provide the meltwater that sustains the rest of the country.
The central region: Inner Himalayas
The Inner Himalayas form the largest geographic region and the heart of Bhutanese life. Elevations here range roughly from 1,100 to 3,000 metres, and the landscape consists of fertile valleys separated by mountain ranges. This is where you find Bhutan’s major towns, including the capital Thimphu, as well as Paro and Punakha. These valleys were carved over millennia by rivers cutting through the mountains, and they house the majority of the population. The climate is temperate, supporting both conifer forests at higher elevations and broadleaf forests lower down. The Black Mountains in this central belt act as a watershed dividing two of Bhutan’s major river systems.
The southern region: foothills and Duars Plain
The south is where Bhutan’s mountains finally surrender to the plains. As the terrain descends, it gives way to the subtropical foothills and the Duars Plain, a flat strip of land bordering the northern edge of the Indian plain. This region receives heavy monsoon rainfall and supports dense subtropical and tropical forests. It is the most agriculturally productive part of the country, with rice as a major crop. The relatively even geography here contrasts sharply with the rugged terrain to the north.
Rivers and drainage
Bhutan’s rivers are central to both its physical landscape and its economy. Most of the country’s rivers originate in the frigid alpine north, fed by melting glaciers, snow, and rain, before flowing swiftly southward. Nearly all of them eventually drain into the Brahmaputra River in India, which then continues into Bangladesh and empties into the Bay of Bengal.
There are four major river systems. The Manas, known in Bhutan as the Drangme Chhu, is the largest and drains most of central and eastern Bhutan. The other three are the Amo Chu (Torsa), the Wang Chu (Raidak), and the Puna Tshang Chu (Sankosh). These rivers carved Bhutan’s valleys and continue to shape its topography. The Punatsangchhu, for instance, is formed when the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu branches meet at Punakha, then runs for around 320 kilometres before joining the Brahmaputra.
Rivers as economic lifeline
The steep gradients and fast flows that make Bhutan’s rivers so scenic also make them ideal for generating electricity. Hydropower has become the backbone of the national economy, accounting for a substantial share of government revenue and GDP. Major projects like the 1,020 MW Tala station on the Wang Chu were developed with Indian cooperation, and much of the electricity generated is exported to India. This makes Bhutan’s geography directly responsible for its most important economic relationship. At the same time, downstream communities in Assam and West Bengal have raised concerns about the ecological and social impacts of these dams, highlighting how a shared river system creates shared responsibilities.
Climate and altitudinal zones
Because elevation changes so dramatically over short distances, Bhutan experiences several climate zones stacked one above the other. Broadly, these correspond to three altitudinal bands. The alpine zone, above roughly 4,000 metres, is cold and largely without forest cover. The temperate zone, between about 2,000 and 4,000 metres, supports conifer and broadleaf forests and experiences cold winters and mild summers. The subtropical zone in the south, below around 1,500 metres, is hot and humid with heavy monsoon rains.
The monsoon plays a defining role, especially in the south, bringing intense rainfall that often triggers landslides on the steep slopes. This combination of altitude and monsoon influence creates a wide spectrum of growing conditions, which in turn supports an exceptional range of plant and animal life. Bhutan recognises six major agro-ecological zones tied to these altitudinal and climatic differences, each suited to different crops and farming practices.
Biodiversity and conservation
Bhutan’s varied terrain has made it one of the world’s great biodiversity reservoirs. The country lies within the Eastern Himalayas, recognised as one of the planet’s most biologically rich regions. Forest covers roughly 71 to 72 percent of the total land area, and this forest hosts an extraordinary variety of species. Bhutan is home to over 5,400 species of plants, including hundreds of medicinal plants, 369 orchid species, and 46 rhododendron varieties.
The forest types shift with altitude, mirroring the geographic regions. The south has tropical and subtropical lowland forests, the middle elevations carry blue pine, chir pine, and broadleaf forests, and the higher temperate zones support fir and mixed conifer forests. Above the treeline lies the alpine zone with its meadows and shrubs.
A constitutional commitment to forests
What truly sets Bhutan apart is how it has woven environmental protection into its legal foundation. The Constitution of Bhutan mandates that at least 60 percent of the country must remain under forest cover for all time. This is not a temporary target but a permanent constitutional safeguard, meaning no government can compromise it for short-term gain. Bhutan has comfortably exceeded this threshold and has even seen its forest cover grow over the decades.
Beyond forest cover, more than half of the country’s land area is set aside as protected areas, including national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, and a strict nature reserve, all linked by biological corridors. This network shelters rare and endangered wildlife such as the royal Bengal tiger, snow leopard, black-necked crane, and species endemic to the Eastern Himalayas like the golden langur. Conservation here is closely tied to the philosophy of Gross National Happiness, which treats environmental well-being as inseparable from economic and cultural development. Bhutan’s intact forests have also allowed it to become one of the few carbon-negative countries in the world.
How geography shapes the kingdom
Bhutan’s terrain is not just a backdrop; it actively shapes the country’s politics, economy, and culture. The rugged mountains historically isolated communities, helping preserve distinct local traditions and a unique cultural identity. The same mountains made nationwide infrastructure difficult and expensive, which influenced how the state developed and connected its scattered valleys. The rivers fund the treasury through hydropower exports, tying Bhutan’s economic fortunes to its geography and to its relationship with India. And the constitutional protection of forests reflects a deliberate choice to make the natural environment a permanent feature of governance rather than a resource to be exhausted. In Bhutan, geography and statecraft are deeply intertwined.
