Globalisation often sounds like a story about trade deals, multinational companies, and open borders. But underneath all of that runs a quieter engine: technology. The cables under the ocean, the satellites overhead, the smartphone in your pocket, and the data centres humming in distant cities are what actually make a connected world possible. This is the technical dimension of globalisation, and it explains how ideas, money, and culture now move across the planet in seconds rather than weeks.

Why technology is the engine of globalisation

Globalisation is the growing interconnection of economies, societies, and cultures across national boundaries. While political decisions and economic policies open the doors, technology is what allows people and goods to actually walk through them at scale and speed. Without the right tools, a free-trade agreement is just paper.

Historically, every wave of globalisation has been tied to a technological leap. The steamship and the telegraph powered the first great expansion in the 1800s. But the most dramatic shift came with Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Around 1990, ICT began to have enormous effects on globalisation, producing a new kind of interconnection unlike anything before. According to UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD), this “New Globalisation” let firms carry their know-how abroad and combine it with low-cost labour, reshaping where and how work happens worldwide.

What counts as ICT?

ICT is a broad family of technologies that handle information and communication. It includes semiconductors, computers, computer networks, communication satellites, mobile phones, and most importantly, the Internet. When these are combined, they provide the infrastructure for global finance, instant communication, and worldwide collaboration. The rise of the global finance sector, one of the most striking features of modern globalisation, would have been impossible without the prior revolution in ICTs.

The network society of Manuel Castells

To understand how deeply technology has reshaped the world, the work of Spanish sociologist Manuel Castells is essential. In his famous trilogy The Information Age (1996-2000), Castells argued that we have entered a new historical phase he calls the network society, a social structure built on information and communication technologies.

For Castells, the central change is that modern society is increasingly organised around networks rather than rigid hierarchies or bureaucracies. He defines a network simply as a set of interconnected nodes that are adaptable, open-ended, and decentralised. Castells observed the rise of a new kind of capitalism he calls “informationalism,” a system driven by the processing of knowledge and information through technology.

Space of flows and timeless time

Castells introduced two ideas that capture how technology rewires our sense of place and time. The first is the space of flows: the technological ability to carry out activities across huge distances without physical proximity. Financial markets and global media operate inside this space, moving value and messages around the planet in real time.

The second idea is timeless time, a condition in which the traditional sequence of social time gets disrupted, allowing asynchronous interaction. A team can work on a single project across many time zones, handing tasks back and forth as the working day moves around the globe. As one description of his theory notes, the new economy is informational, global, and networked, making activities possible on a planetary scale in real time.

The global village: an older vision

Long before the Internet, the Canadian communications theorist Marshall McLuhan predicted much of this. In his 1964 book Understanding Media, he coined the term global village to describe a world in which electronic media shrink distance and isolation so dramatically that the planet starts to feel like a single community. As McLuhan put it, all parts of the world were being brought together by electronic interconnection.

McLuhan was writing in the age of radio and television, yet his vision feels strikingly accurate today. A person in one country can watch live events unfold on the other side of the world and respond instantly. The “village” metaphor captures the sense that we now share a common, real-time awareness of one another. The economist Frances Cairncross later pushed this idea to its logical end with her phrase the “death of distance,” predicting a future where physical location simply stops mattering for communication.

Techno-globalism: technology dismantling barriers

The optimistic interpretation of all this is captured by a social theory called techno-globalism. According to this view, the spread of science and technology naturally pulls different nations and societies together into a more open, knowledge-based, and globalised group. Techno-globalism sees technology development that is jointly conducted with international participants and shared across borders as a powerful unifying force.

Techno-globalism is closely tied to the idea of a liberal global economic system. The argument is that technology dismantles the barriers that once kept economies separate. Consider how this works across three kinds of barriers:

Breaking down geographic, economic, and cultural barriers

Geographic barriers: ICT lets people communicate and transact across vast distances, making physical location far less important. A video call connects colleagues in different continents as easily as in the same office.

Economic barriers: E-commerce platforms and digital payment systems make it far easier for businesses and consumers to engage in international trade. A small bakery can now sell to customers thousands of kilometres away through an online storefront.

Cultural barriers: Digital media spreads ideas, music, films, and conversations across societies, fostering cross-cultural exchange. Social platforms let people encounter perspectives they would never have met locally.

Techno-globalism also marks a shift in how nations treat technology, moving from technology as competition toward technology as cooperation. Massive science projects, like international space stations or particle accelerators, often require the co-funding and shared knowledge of many nations at once.

The digital wave in everyday life: India’s example

Few places show the technical dimension of globalisation more vividly than India’s digital transformation. The country now has one of the largest internet user bases on the planet. According to the India Brand Equity Foundation, India had around 969 million internet subscribers by March 2025, with the digital economy on track to become a one-trillion-dollar force by 2030.

This connectivity has powered an e-commerce boom. The same source notes that India’s e-commerce market is projected to reach roughly US$211 billion in 2025, driven by strong online demand and digital payments. A large share of new shoppers are emerging from smaller Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, showing how the network reaches well beyond the metros.

Digital payments and convergence

Perhaps the clearest example of converging global and local contexts is the Unified Payments Interface (UPI). This homegrown system has turned a mobile phone into a wallet for hundreds of millions of people. The Invest India portal describes how this new era of digital globalisation has produced an extraordinary phenomenon: the rapid transmission of information and innovation that broadens the entire global economy. Digital tools built for a local population now interact seamlessly with global commerce, financial flows, and supply chains.

The other side: the digital divide

The story is not entirely rosy. The same technologies that connect billions also leave many behind, and this is where the optimistic vision of techno-globalism meets a serious challenge. The digital divide describes the gap between those who have access to computers, the Internet, and digital skills, and those who do not.

Critics point out that the “global village” is far from universal. People in rural areas and developing regions often lack reliable internet infrastructure or the literacy to use it, creating a two-tiered world. Castells himself warned that global informational capitalism carries a tendency toward increased social inequality and polarisation. The global division of labour produces winners who are highly skilled information workers and losers who are downgraded, informal, or excluded entirely.

There are cultural concerns too. The dominance of certain languages and platforms online means the digital world is not as diverse as the “global village” ideal suggests. McLuhan even cautioned about the “tribalisation” of the global village, where heightened global awareness can sharpen local conflicts rather than dissolve them. Trade tensions between major powers over technology show that interconnection does not automatically produce harmony.

Bringing it together

The technical dimension of globalisation is the foundation on which the economic, political, and cultural dimensions all rest. ICT, and especially the Internet, has created what Castells calls a network society and what McLuhan foresaw as a global village. Production, consumption, and social interaction have all been transformed on a planetary scale, with information flowing through the space of flows in something close to real time.

Techno-globalism captures the promise of this shift: a more open, interconnected, and liberal global economy where barriers fall away. But the digital divide reminds us that access to this network is uneven, and that the same tools which connect us can also deepen existing inequalities. Understanding both sides is essential to grasping how technology truly shapes our connected world.
