Every time you step into a polling booth, your vote enters a machine far more complex than the ballot paper in front of you. The rule that converts millions of individual choices into a single winner is the electoral system, and the most widely used family of these rules is the majoritarian system. These methods share one goal: hand power to whoever commands the most support in a constituency. But “most support” can mean very different things, and the differences shape who governs, which parties survive, and whether your vote ends up mattering at all. This post breaks down four majoritarian methods, First-Past-the-Post, the Second Ballot, the Alternative Vote, and the Condorcet Method, and explains what each one gets right and wrong.

What makes a system majoritarian
An electoral system is simply the set of rules that determine how votes are converted into seats in a legislature. Majoritarian systems operate on a straightforward principle: the candidate with the most votes in a constituency wins the seat. Most use single-member constituencies, meaning each area sends exactly one representative to the legislature.
There is an important distinction within this family. A plurality winner is the candidate with more votes than any rival, even if that figure is well below half. A majority winner must clear 50 percent. In majority systems, a candidate must win at least 50 percent of the vote, and if nobody does, further rounds or vote transfers are used to manufacture one. This single difference, plurality versus absolute majority, is what separates the four methods discussed below.
First-Past-the-Post: the simplest method
First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) is the method used for Lok Sabha and state assembly elections, and also in the United Kingdom, Canada, and the United States. The country is divided into constituencies, and each voter marks a single favourite candidate with an “X”. The candidate with the highest tally wins, regardless of whether they crossed the halfway mark. There are 543 Lok Sabha constituencies, each electing one Member of Parliament on this basis.
The appeal is real. FPTP is easy to understand, fast to count, and tends to produce clear single-party majorities that allow decisive governance. The flip side is that it routinely converts a minority of votes into a majority of seats.
The problem of wasted votes
Under FPTP, a candidate can win a multi-cornered contest with far less than half the vote. In a seat with five candidates, someone winning 28 percent can take it while 72 percent of voters are left unrepresented. Every vote cast for a losing candidate, plus every vote a winner receives beyond what they needed, is effectively a wasted vote. This is the central criticism of the system.
The Indian record illustrates the gap vividly. In the 2014 general election, the BJP won a full majority of 282 seats with roughly 31 percent of the popular vote. The pattern is old: in the 1950s and 1960s, the Congress repeatedly won around 75 percent of Lok Sabha seats with only 45 to 48 percent of votes. Researchers measuring this mismatch with the Gallagher Index of disproportionality find that India’s score sits above 5, the threshold the Canadian electoral reform committee treated as acceptable.
Duverger’s law and the Indian exception
The political scientist Maurice Duverger argued that FPTP pushes a country toward a two-party system, because voters are reluctant to “waste” a ballot on a third party with little chance of winning. India is the textbook exception to this prediction. Far from collapsing into two parties, the Election Commission recognised eight national parties and 54 state parties in 2021, alongside thousands of unrecognised ones. Regional and caste-based identities sustain strong local parties in states like Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, where the two-party logic breaks down entirely.
The Second Ballot: forcing a majority through two rounds
The Second Ballot system, also called the two-round system or runoff voting, is designed to guarantee that the winner has genuine majority support. It is the method most famously associated with France, used for its presidential and legislative elections. It produces a majoritarian result rather than the simple-plurality result of FPTP.
How the two rounds work
In the first round, voters cast a single vote much as they would under FPTP. If a candidate wins an outright majority, they are elected immediately. If nobody clears 50 percent, a second round is held a week or two later. Usually only the top two candidates advance to the second round, and whoever wins that runoff takes the seat. France’s legislative elections use a slightly more open variant: any candidate winning more than 12.5 percent of registered voters may advance to the second round.
There is a useful saying about this system: in the first round you vote with your heart, and in the second you vote with your head. Because of this, there is less need to vote tactically in the first round. You can support your genuine favourite knowing you will still have a say between the two front-runners later.
Strengths and weaknesses
The main advantage is legitimacy: the winner always has the backing of more than half the voters in the final round. The drawbacks are cost and time, since running two elections is expensive and drawn out, and it can encourage tactical behaviour between rounds. The 2002 French presidential election is the classic cautionary tale. The far-right candidate Jean-Marie Le Pen qualified for the runoff, which handed Jacques Chirac one of the largest landslides in French history as voters across the spectrum united against Le Pen. The system still shares one flaw with FPTP: votes for eliminated candidates in the first round are wasted.
The Alternative Vote: an instant runoff
The Alternative Vote (AV) achieves the two-round system’s goal of a majority winner, but compresses everything into a single election using ranked ballots. It is known as “ranked-choice voting” in the United States, “preferential voting” in Australia, and “alternative vote” in the United Kingdom. Australia uses it to elect its House of Representatives.
Ranking instead of choosing
Instead of marking a single X, voters rank candidates in order of preference: 1 for their favourite, 2 for their next choice, and so on. The count begins with first preferences. A candidate who receives over 50 percent of first preferences is declared the winner immediately. If nobody does, the candidate with the fewest first-preference votes is eliminated, and their ballots are transferred to whichever remaining candidate those voters ranked next. This process repeats, eliminating the last-place candidate each round, until someone has a majority. Because it simulates a series of runoffs without sending voters back to the polls, it is also called instant-runoff voting.
The Supplementary Vote variant
A close cousin is the Supplementary Vote (SV), also known as the contingent vote, which elects a single representative through a two-stage process using ranked voting. Here voters mark only a first and second preference. First preferences are counted, and if no candidate has a majority, all but the top two are eliminated at once. The second preferences of the eliminated ballots are then transferred to whichever of the two survivors they name. It is essentially a compressed, single-step version of AV that London once used to elect its mayor.
What AV gets right and wrong
AV reduces wasted votes because a ballot for an eliminated candidate is reassigned rather than discarded, and it lets voters support a small party honestly without fear of helping their least-favourite win. The catch is that despite its reputation, there is no guarantee any candidate will actually reach more than half the votes once exhausted ballots are set aside. It is also more complex to count and explain than a simple X.
The Condorcet Method: the head-to-head winner
The Condorcet Method, named after the 18th-century French mathematician the Marquis de Condorcet, takes a completely different approach to fairness. Instead of counting first preferences, it asks: which candidate would beat every other candidate in a one-on-one contest?
Pairwise comparisons
The method runs a simulated head-to-head race between every possible pair of candidates using the rankings on voters’ ballots. For each pairing, you count how many voters prefer candidate A to candidate B and vice versa, and the one preferred by more voters wins that matchup. If one candidate beats every other candidate in these contests, they are declared the Condorcet winner. The logic is that this person enjoys the broadest acceptance: not necessarily the most passionate supporters, but the one a majority would choose over any single rival. This is exactly the candidate FPTP can miss, because a broadly liked compromise candidate may trail a polarising one on first preferences.
The voting paradox
The method has a famous catch that Condorcet himself identified. Sometimes no candidate beats all others, because preferences form a loop: a majority prefers A to B, another majority prefers B to C, yet a third majority prefers C to A. This is the Condorcet paradox, where collective preferences become cyclic even though every individual voter’s preferences are perfectly consistent. It is the voting equivalent of rock-paper-scissors, where rock beats scissors, scissors beats paper, and paper beats rock.
When this happens, there is no clear winner from pairwise comparisons alone, and an alternative method such as instant-runoff or another tie-breaking rule is needed to resolve the cycle. Reassuringly, such cycles are empirically rare in real elections. This complexity, however, is the main reason the Condorcet Method, despite being theoretically elegant, is almost never used for major public elections and is found more often in club, software, and organisational voting.
Comparing the four methods
The four systems form a clear progression in how hard they work to find a genuine majority. FPTP is the simplest and fastest but tolerates minority winners and the most wasted votes. The Second Ballot guarantees a majority but at the cost of a second election. The Alternative Vote chases the same majority in one round through ranked ballots, cutting wasted votes but adding counting complexity. The Condorcet Method seeks the candidate with the broadest cross-party acceptance, which is arguably the fairest standard, but stumbles over the possibility of cyclic preferences.
The trade-off running through all of them is the tension between governability and representativeness. FPTP leans hard toward strong, stable single-party governments, which is part of why the framers of the Constitution chose it for a vast and diverse country. The ranked and runoff methods lean toward ensuring the winner reflects what most voters actually want, even if that produces messier, more coalition-prone outcomes. No method is perfect; each makes a different bet about which value matters more. India’s own debates about electoral reform turn precisely on whether the skewed translation of votes into seats under FPTP is worth the stability it delivers.
